Project Management: how to understand what innovations are required in project management"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Innovation <\/strong>has become a <strong>key expertise <\/strong>and is essential for success in a rapidly changing strategic environment.<\/p>\n<p>In a way, if we think about it properly, every project, even if it looks like a duplicate, is undertaken for the first time.<\/p>\n<div class=\"table-of-content\">\n<h5>CONTENTS<\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"#role\">The role of the innovation in project management<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#models\">Project management: traditional models vs. innovative models<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#understanding\">Understanding innovation in project management<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p>A project team may not be the first to design a particular product, <strong>but it will be the first to build THAT exact product<\/strong>, which must be built at that time, using that team, with those suppliers and those limits.<\/p>\n<p>Project management is based on <strong>opening up new horizons<\/strong> and doing things that have never been done before.<\/p>\n<p>This puts <strong>innovation right at the heart of what the project manager does<\/strong> every day.<\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s take a look at what is meant by <strong>innovation in project management<\/strong> and how a project manager can approach it in the right way.<br \/>\n<a name=\"role\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>The role of the innovation in project management<\/h2>\n<p>Innovation, as a <strong>management expertise<\/strong>, is difficult to be defined.<\/p>\n<p>In a commercial sense, the term &#8220;innovation&#8221; refers to the translation of an idea into a commercially marketable product, thus giving the wrong idea that only people like Steve Jobs and other visionaries can be called &#8220;innovators&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, the dictionary&#8217;s definition &#8211; &#8220;<strong>doing something in a new way<\/strong>&#8221; &#8211; is too broad to be meaningful, since many &#8220;innovative&#8221; ideas have failed to produce real value.<\/p>\n<p>Consider, for example, the mechanical bread slicer: invented in the early 1920s, this slicer was described by early users as impractical and cumbersome. .<\/p>\n<p>The customers thought that the sliced bread looked unattractive, because once sliced, it was difficult to hold the bread together long enough to pack it in an orderly fashion.<\/p>\n<p>The problem persisted until the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sliced_bread\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">baker Gustav Papendick decided to improve the device<\/a>, by placing a cardboard tray that would hold the bread together long enough for the wrapping machines to work.<\/p>\n<p>The mechanical bread slicer alone was therefore not an innovation and did not provide real value to the customer.<\/p>\n<p>It was only when Papendick combined the bread slicer with the cardboard tray that real value was added, which was an innovation.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Innovation is in fact the origination and implementation of ideas that add value to the organization.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Daily innovation therefore comes from the combination of creativity and improvement.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12843\" src=\"https:\/\/twproject.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/innovation-scouting-and-pm.png\" alt=\"innovation scouting and pm\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" srcset=\"https:\/\/twproject.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/innovation-scouting-and-pm.png 1280w, https:\/\/twproject.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/innovation-scouting-and-pm-630x420.png 630w, https:\/\/twproject.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/innovation-scouting-and-pm-1130x753.png 1130w, https:\/\/twproject.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/innovation-scouting-and-pm-705x470.png 705w, https:\/\/twproject.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/innovation-scouting-and-pm-450x300.png 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 1362px) 62vw, 840px\" \/><a name=\"models\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Project management: traditional models vs. innovative models<\/h2>\n<p>Traditional <strong>project management <\/strong>models have focused almost exclusively on the delivery of products and services, i.e. results with <strong>precise and measurable execution criteria<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In this context,<strong> innovation opportunities <\/strong>are generally only focused <strong>on problem solving<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>For example, when faced with a risk that needs to be avoided or mitigated, a project manager often needs to generate ideas that add value &#8211; innovate &#8211; in order to determine appropriate <a href=\"https:\/\/twproject.com\/blog\/risk-response-strategies-mitigation-transfer-avoidance-acceptance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reaction to the risk<\/a>\u00a0and emergency plan.<\/p>\n<p>The most recent project management models, on the other hand, focus mainly on <strong>achieving a result<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Scope, planning and costs are important, however they are subordinate to the overall results that the organization is trying to achieve.<\/p>\n<p>For example, the task of a project manager could be to <strong>improve customer loyalty<\/strong> by 10% in one year.<\/p>\n<p>In this model, the project manager&#8217;s work is partly tactical, i.e. responsible for executing the scope of work over the indicated time period, and partly strategic, i.e. responsible for:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Interpreting business strategy<\/li>\n<li>Assessing the feasibility of the goal<\/li>\n<li>Analyzing the cause of the problem<\/li>\n<li>Advising and\/or creating a solution<\/li>\n<li>Formulating a work environment<\/li>\n<li>Executing the project and monitoring performance<\/li>\n<li>Ensuring the achievement of strategic objectives<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In this model, <strong>innovation becomes more pivotal <\/strong>for the project manager&#8217;s work.<\/p>\n<p>The project manager must actively look for ideas that add value throughout the <a href=\"https:\/\/twproject.com\/blog\/project-life-cycle-phases-and-characteristics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">project lifecycle<\/a>\u00a0in order to ensure the achievement of the result.<\/p>\n<p>The attitude of an organization towards risk will strongly influence the ability of a project manager to <strong>carry out innovation<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In non-risk organizations, in fact, compliance with best practices, that is, a traditional model of project management, is generally preferred over innovation and experimentation.<br \/>\n<a name=\"understanding\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Understanding innovation in project management<\/h2>\n<p>Innovation is not the result of a lone ingenious inventor &#8211; at least not in most cases &#8211; but it rather <strong>concerns the involvement of people who test the status quo<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Innovation is a collaborative process<\/strong>, where people in many areas contribute to the realization of new ideas.<\/p>\n<p>Too often, a team member&#8217;s suggestions are evaluated or criticized or other ways are found to identify &#8220;rational&#8221; reasons why these suggestions cannot be accepted at the moment.<\/p>\n<p>In short, many potential ideas are killed before they even have a chance to see the light of day.<\/p>\n<p>The project manager is therefore responsible for <a href=\"https:\/\/twproject.com\/blog\/motivate-project-team-8-fundamental-aspects\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">motivating the team<\/a>\u00a0to openly express new ideas and creative thoughts.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, it is necessary that any new idea does not get judged or classified negatively, however it is important that a constructive dialogue takes place in order to explain &#8211; if necessary &#8211; why one idea cannot be implemented.<\/p>\n<p>In conclusion, like any other skill, <strong>the ability to innovate requires time<\/strong>, practice and a favourable environment.<\/p>\n<p>When innovation is limited because of risk aversion or a reluctant environment to listen, competence cannot be developed.<\/p>\n<p>When competence is not developed, companies struggle to remain competitive and fit for the market, leading to long-term negative results.<\/p>\n<div class=\"tw_promobox centered box_type2 sBlue sFilter sImage\" style=\"background-image: url('https:\/\/static.twproject.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/get-it-now-r.jpg');
